The Alhambra is a fortress and palace sitting atop a giant spur of high ground, overlooking the city of Granada. There are two rivers running along each side of the rocky outcrop.
This is a view of the Nasrid Palace within the Alhambra, seen from below where the River Darro flows. The Nasrid Palace contains beautiful remnants of Moorish art and architcture. Alas, much of the Arab structures were destroyed to make way for additions demanded by Christian Kings after the Reconquista.
This is a view from the Generalife looking towards the Alcazaba, the ancient Arab fortress at the tip of the spur.
The Generalife provided the pleasure gardens for the Arab rulers. The idea was to create a paradise on earth, a worthy aim. These gardens are filled with flowers and fountains.
This is a view of the Sentry Walk in the Alcazaba, the ancient Arab fortress. In the distance we can see the Sacromonte, with remnants of defensive walls climbing to the top of the mountain.
A courtyard in the Nasrid Palace, with a fountain supported by an array of lions.
Stunning decoration in the Nasrid Palace. I wonder who lived in that room in the 12th Century and peered through the lattice work of the windows at the courtyard below.
I wonder if there is any symbolic significance for the use of the eight pointed, Judaic, star shape of this lovely dome?
This is a view of the Alhambra from the old Arab quarter, called the Albayzin.
The Sierra Nevada mountain range is visible in the background. It was still covered in snow, late in May, 2013. It has been a cold Spring that year.

The Alcazaba can be seen in the middle of the picture. In front of it, there are buildings as well as an ancient defensive wall. Make sure to see the page of photos from the rest of Granada, which is a beautiful city.
