This memorial to Van Gogh is in a park in Arles. Van Gogh painted some of his best known paintings when he lived here.
Arles has a rich history, but its most glorious time was during the Ancient Roman occupation. It was then much closer to the sea and it was an important port, rivalling Massalia (Marseilles). It was the favourite city of Constantine I.

The picture above is of the Roman Theatre.

The Roman Circus is a most impressive structure and is remarkably well preserved.
A view from the Roman Circus.
The Church of Saint-Trophine is a delightful example of Romanesque art and architecture. It was built between the 12th and 15th Centuries.
The following three photos are of the sculptures adorning the main portal of St Trophime.
The interior of St Trophime is austere.
This lovely stained glass window looks to me like a 19th Century work. I could not find any information on it.
The Cloister of St Trophime.
Standing on the roof of the Cloister, looking at the tower.
The Baths of Constantine. As I mentioned earlier, Arles was a favourite place of residence for Constantine I, the Roman Emperor who was the first of his kind to embrace Christianity.
The River Rhone flows alonside Arles. It had often experienced wild floods in the past, hence the massive sloping walls. The Romans built a bridge here, but it was based on floating pontoons as conventional bridges would have been swept away by the floods.
