Staying in Nice for 10 days enabled me to do day trips up and down the Southern French coast all the way from Menton to Cannes. I went by bus and train which was a most pleasant way to travel.

However, when I was there, there were a series of rolling strikes by transport workers. Apparently, there was a struggle with the government over pay and conditions and this meant that travelling by public transport was like a game of Russian Roulette. You could never be sure if you were going to be firing blanks.

Menton.

This section of the French coast had been a part of Italy, and Menton was known as Mentone. Even the pronunciation of the two names took on French and Italian flavours. Mentone was pronounced as Men-toe-nay. There is also an Italian feel to the town itself.

Cannes.

If you aren't all that interested in gawking at movie stars, Cannes is a bit boring. Ah well. You can't win them all.

Antibes is to the West Of Nice. A lovely old fort stands guard over the harbour.

Antibes still has parts of its old defensive walls around the Old Town.

Fort Carre in Antibes.

It was built in the 16th Century by Henri de Mandon and redeveloped in the 17th Cnetury by the famous fort builder, the Marquis de Vauban. On this trip I came across several forts built by the Marquis in the Pyrenees.
