Multifunction Poli
Way back in 1990, there was a brave idea being floated in South Australia. With loads of Japanese money (remember, they were very rich then) the State Government of South Australia was going to establish a "Multifunction Polis" which was to be a thriving hub of scientific and technological research. Bob Hawke was Prime Minister at the time and he enthusiastically pushed the idea.

Alas, the Japanese had other plans for this project. They were envisioning, instead, a large complex of golf courses for their wealthy executives, no doubt giving plenty of employment opportunities for young Australians as caddies.

The plan fizzled.
